Premature Infants and Infant Mortality

Project Overview

Africa has a high rate of infant mortality in premature and low birth weight (LBW) babies. LBW infants use nearly half their energy intake maintaining body temperature, so provision of warmth and prevention of heat loss can significantly improve survival rates. In Lagos Nigeria, availability of incubators/warmers are uncommon or the available equipment can be old, malfunctioning or in
The overall goal is to increase the overall health of children by reducing the mortality rate of infants by helping provide the equipment needed for premature infants in identified government hospitals. District 9110 in Lagos, Nigeria will be hosting the grant, ensuring sustainability and measures necessary to evaluate the implementation and success of this project along with International District 6980 and the lead club in Lake Mary, FL.
Established project specific measures include quantitative, qualitative data and research (baseline data) to include numbers of infant survival rates and deaths before and after the project. Outlined responsibilities of those monitoring the project from the host district will assist in collecting the necessary data points to evaluate impact of the project. Evaluations and reporting will run after six months, then again after a year.
Equipment that will be provided for these hospitals are incubators, oxygen delivery system, electric generator, mosquito netting, and baby cots.
